Our Students York Region District School Board is the third largest school district in Ontario, with over 120,000 students in 170 elementary schools and 31 secondary schools. York Region students consistently perform above average in provincial testing and the Board is one of the top achievers in Ontario. We believe this is due to a unique combination of students who are prepared and motivated to succeed; teachers who are skilled at helping students learn; strong educational leaders who subscribe to a common vision of excellence; and a supportive community that understands the importance of quality public education. 2. 3. Our Board of Trustees The 12 trustees of the York Region District School Board are responsible for overseeing a thriving and progressive educational system including nearly 200 schools. Trustees are elected by ratepayers (in accordance with the Municipal Elections Act ) and empowered under the Education Act to set policy for the operation of all public schools in York Region. Two student trustees, elected by their peers, act as a liaison between the school community and the Board. They give the student population a meaningful voice in Board deliberations and act as a conduit for the flow of information and ideas between trustees and the student body. 4. Our Mission Vision and Values Our Mission, Vision and Values are at the core of everything we do, and every decision we make as an organization. It is the way we as an organization approach business and demonstrates our commitment to life-long learning. 5. Our Goals Our long term goals are identified in the recently adopted Trustee’s Multi-Year Plan. The Plan has a sharp focus on student achievement and well-being, the delivery of effective and sustainable programs and the effective stewardship of Board resources. We believe that each student can experience high levels of success. We also believe in the importance of each staff member being able to perform in a safe and supportive working environment that supports and instills the desire to do his or her best.
6. Our Communities School communities in York Region include suburban, small town and rural neighbor hoods and a wide array of racial, ethnic and cultural groups. As of December 2010, the Region of York estimated the population to be approximately 1,062,000. The population of York Region is expected to reach 1.5 million by 2031.
