Friday, 14/02/2020, 08:12 GMT+7

In recent years, Canada government open the door for international students to study and apply Post Graduation Work Permit in Canada. Unfortunately, not all programs qualify with PGWP. If you select a wrong program, you may not qualify to apply the Post Graduation Work Permit

In this video, I want to share about which program you should choose to study in Canada to be eligible or not eligible for a post graduation work permit (PGWP).

What is post grad work permit?

Post grad work permit is a program offer to international students, who studied in Canada and eligible for work because they finished a program and apply for open work permit which is call post grad work permit.

How old are you to qualify the program?

You must be 18 years old and above to be eligible for the PGWP. This is the first requirement you should remember. If you are younger then 18, usually you are not in college or university. The PGWP is only offer for university and college students. It means if you are high school student, you are not eligible for post graduation work permit.

Post Graduation Work Permit

You must study full-time program in Canada.

Most of international student study in Canada under study permit are full-time students. There are some questions from our clients about full-time program which I would like to share with you to avoid confusions.

Example 1: If you are not studying during long vacation such as Christmas time, Spring break or summer holiday during you full-time program, it would be fine and you still be eligible for full-time student.

Example 2: You selected your own course and choose your own schedule. Example: instead of studying 5 days a week, you compress your study into 3 days a week. It would be fine as long as you speak with your school and make sure your choice of schedule is eligible to full-time study. Most of schools will support their students on how to select study schedule and take classes to qualify as a full-time student. Checking with school before selecting course, it is very important step.

If you are studying part-time program, you are not eligible for post graduation work permit

How long you can stay for Post Graduation Work Permit

Less than 8 months program: you are not eligible for post graduation work permit

If your program was more than 8 months but less than 2 years: You will get a PGWP that’s valid for up to the same length as your study program.

For example, if you completed a 9-month program, you may get a work permit for up to 9 months. It would be fine if the program in 12 month includes 3 months for summer time (starting in September and finishing in April or May). Example for one year’s program: Vocational certificate | Post graduate Certificate | Short Master program

If your program was 2 years or more. You may get you a PGWP that’s valid for 3 years.

If you completed more than 1 program: You may be able to get a PGWP that base on the longest length of program. Example: you study 2 year Diploma then transfer to 2 year to finish Bachelor program. Then you could apply for 3 year post graduation work permit.

How to make the right choice of study and schools to get the PGWP?

Not all programs, colleges or universities in Canada qualify with PGWP although you have followed the right duration of study.

  • All public colleges and Universities will provide PGWP.
  • Some programs at private colleges or universities offer the same program requirements and schedule as public school then mostly that school will qualify with PGWP. The best way that you should talk to the school Registrar whether those are same requirements as public schools.

How to make the right choice programs at private colleges or universities to qualify PGWP?

Private schools that operate the same programs as public schools such as Diploma, Advance Dip, Bachelor, Post Graduate Diploma, Master or Doctoral. They will qualify PGWP.

  • You should talk to the Dean or the registrar of that private school to see if that program qualifies PGWP.
  • If the college or University is an overseas private branch runs their program in Canada, then you won’t qualify with PGWP after graduate that program.
  • You are not eligible for a post grad work permit if you choose a less then 8 months program as private schools.

I have talked to many students and felt upset for them when they shared they have spent thousands of dollars to study this particular program. They got study permit but when they applied PGWP, they have been rejected. When I saw they refusal letter, they refusal reason because of the school or the program they were studying doesn’t qualify for the post grad. So you must careful research the school and program you are going to study to avoid spending thousands of dollars and have nothing in the end.

I have copied the link of CIC website which you could find below this video. This would help you to know which schools are eligible and which schools are not eligible.

Will Online program or distance learning be qualified with PGWP?

Unfortunately, the answer is NO. If you done a program online, that will not allow you to apply for post grad work permit.

Taking some semesters off – Will you be qualified with PGWP?

A lot of students ask me that they took some semester off for working ( not internship program), and they want to applied PGWP. Unfortunately, it again the international students must study full-times. In this case, you were not study full-time, you took a semester off, this will not make you eligible for PGWP.

I hope the video provided you some information helpful for you to avoid the bad situation in rejection of PGWP after graduating your program in Canada.
